UCL Fantasy MD1 2026/27: My First Draft and Early Team Picks

The new UEFA Champions League Fantasy 2026/27 season is approaching, which means it is time to start building a first squad for Matchday 1.

In my latest video, I reveal my first UCL Fantasy MD1 draft for the 2026/27 season, including the players I am currently considering, my early team structure and the key decisions that could shape my squad before the Matchday 1 deadline.

This is an early draft rather than a final team. There is still plenty of time for team news, injuries, transfers, starting XI information and other developments to influence the final squad.

The aim is not simply to pick the biggest names in the Champions League. Building a strong UCL Fantasy squad requires consideration of fixtures, player roles, expected minutes, attacking involvement, defensive potential, captaincy and the structure of the squad as a whole.

My First UCL Fantasy Draft for 2026/27

This first draft gives me a starting point from which to build towards MD1.

Rather than treating the initial squad as final, I will continue assessing the options as more information becomes available. Champions League Fantasy can change quickly once we know more about likely starting line-ups and how clubs are approaching their opening fixtures.

Some of the most important questions to consider before finalising a UCL Fantasy MD1 team include:

  • Which premium players offer the best captaincy potential?

  • Which players provide value at their position?

  • Which clubs have the most attractive Matchday 1 fixtures?

  • Which players are likely to receive enough minutes to justify their price?

  • Are there reliable defensive options worth targeting?

  • Which midfielders and forwards offer the best combination of goals, assists and bonus potential?

  • Which players could become strong differentials?

  • How should the squad be structured around the Matchday 1 fixtures?

Best UCL Fantasy Picks for MD1

One of the biggest challenges when creating a first draft is separating popular players from genuinely strong Fantasy picks.

A player can be an excellent real-life footballer without necessarily being the best UCL Fantasy option.

For Fantasy purposes, I am particularly interested in players who combine:

Strong fixtures + attacking role + expected minutes + Fantasy potential

A midfielder who regularly gets into the penalty area, for example, can be more attractive than a similarly priced player whose role is deeper. Likewise, an attacking full-back can offer multiple routes to points through goals, assists and defensive returns.

That is why the first draft is designed to identify players with the right Fantasy profile rather than simply selecting the most recognisable Champions League names.

UCL Fantasy Captaincy

Captaincy is another major consideration when building the first MD1 draft.

The captain receives a significant boost from a strong performance, meaning the choice of captain can have a major impact on your Matchday score.

For MD1, I will be looking closely at:

  • Fixture difficulty

  • Home advantage

  • Expected minutes

  • Recent attacking form

  • Penalty and set-piece responsibilities

  • Goal and assist potential

  • Whether the player is likely to start

A first draft should therefore leave enough flexibility to accommodate the strongest captaincy options once the fixtures and team news have been assessed.

UCL Fantasy Differentials

You do not necessarily need a team full of obvious premium picks to perform well.

Finding UCL Fantasy differentials can be particularly useful if a player has a favourable fixture, strong underlying role or attractive price but is being overlooked by a large percentage of managers.

However, going differential simply for the sake of being different can be dangerous.

The best differentials are players who have a realistic route to outperforming their ownership.

That is something I will be looking for as the 2026/27 Champions League season approaches.

Why This Is Only My First Draft

It is important to emphasise that this is not my final UCL Fantasy MD1 team.

The purpose of an early draft is to create a framework.

Between this first draft and the Matchday 1 deadline, there may be:

  • New transfer developments

  • Injuries

  • Pre-season performances

  • Changes in expected starting line-ups

  • Rotation concerns

  • Team news

  • Price considerations

  • New information about fixtures and player roles

That means some players currently included in my squad could ultimately be removed, while players currently outside the draft could become essential targets.

I would recommend treating an early UCL Fantasy draft in the same way: as a starting point rather than a finished team.

UCL Fantasy 2026/27 Strategy

The early stages of a new Champions League Fantasy season are particularly interesting because there is limited information compared with later Matchdays.

That makes squad structure important.

A balanced first draft should give you enough flexibility to react to new information without requiring multiple major changes.

I will therefore be considering the balance between:

Premium players The expensive players capable of delivering big attacking returns and strong captaincy scores.

Mid-priced options Players who can provide reliable points without consuming too much of the budget.

Budget picks Cheaper players who can provide squad depth and potentially outperform their price.

Differentials Lower-owned players who could provide an advantage if they perform.

When Should You Finalise Your UCL Fantasy MD1 Team?

There is a big difference between creating your first draft and locking in your final team.

My recommendation is to use the early draft to identify your core players, then reassess the squad as the Matchday 1 deadline gets closer.

The closer you get to the deadline, the more important confirmed team news and expected line-ups become.

That is particularly important in UCL Fantasy because Champions League managers have additional strategic considerations around fixtures and substitutions.

My latest video goes through my first UCL Fantasy draft for Matchday 1 of the 2026/27 season, including the players currently in my squad and the thinking behind the selections.

I will continue updating my thinking as we get closer to the opening Matchday, so this first draft is the starting point for what should become the final MD1 squad.

If you are playing UEFA Champions League Fantasy in 2026/27, this is the perfect time to start building your watchlist, assessing the fixtures and identifying the players you want to target before Matchday 1.
